Shimmer New Work By Tony Heywood
At Fas 12 - 20 January 2007
A series of giant interlocking jewelled sculptures, originally inspired by plankton, amoeba and pollen grains, will occupy the gallery floor and walls.
Shimmer has been four years in the making and is a result of a series of commissions. The sculptures have been exhibited in a variety of contexts; as floating sculptures in the North Atlantic and on the Serpentine in London’s Hyde Park; as wall-mounted forms at Charles Fort in Ireland and in the tree canopies of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Belfast.
Their final resting place in November was on the lawn of Tate Britain. The FAS show will be the first gallery display of this unique work, where it will be available to buy.
Shimmer’s fantastic sparkling forms celebrate the beauty of the microscopic. The reflective jewelled surfaces create a mesmerising spectacle, bringing these organic forms to life.
Tony Heywood’s artistic practice is not easily categorised. It has been termed ‘horticultural installation art’ and falls between sculpture and environmental land art. It ranges in scale from the monumental to illustrated micro-landscapes in bell-jars and Petri dishes.
He has exhibited internationally and is considered an authority on the garden as a fine art form.
