Jonathan Baldock H.E
20th February- 2nd March 2008
“I am fascinated by the handmade craft object. I enjoy its associative values as something familiar from my childhood, but also its unwarranted cosy connotations that can become thrilling when subverted and distorted with the suppositious and traditional nature of craft in folklore, fairs and ritual. This connects with my love of the dark, glamorous and uncanny spectacle of theatre. Where the beautiful unmasks the horrific.”
Jonathan Baldock makes darkly humorous, theatrical objects and paintings which are at times sinister and unattractive. He employs a number of techniques from knitting, weaving and home economics, creating ironic tensions between the choice of material and subject matter.
