THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
19 September – 11 October 2007

Christopher Wood went to Tréboul, Brittany in June 1930. His lover Frosca Munster later joined him there, but she was forced to return to Paris by the death of her mother. In the next six weeks Wood made forty paintings. In a letter to Ben and Winifred Nicholson he said that he was working a lot at night, using postcards to help him remember a scene. Street in Tréboul relates to such a postcard and this painting, produced in the same year as his tragic and early death, is one of the highlights of The Fine Art Society’s major selling exhibition focusing on British art of the 20th Century that runs from 19 September to 11 October at 148 New Bond Street.

The exhibition also includes Primrose Hill by Frank Auerbach, who has lived and worked in the Camden Town area of London since the 1950s. Auerbach’s work returns again to the same subjects, reworking, refining, and finding new essence in every version. He does not have professional affiliations, but has applied himself to the refinement of the process of freedom in his painting in a disciplined career that is enriched by studying historical paintings. His absolute loyalty to qualitative intensity is the hallmark of his work.

Two monumental canvases by Sandra Blow, a pioneer of the British post-war abstract movement, are the first works from the artist’s estate to go on sale at The Fine Art Society. A major exhibition of work from the artist’s estate is scheduled here for 2008.

Other artists include Patrick Caulfield, William Nicholson, Paul Nash and Barbara Hepworth, and Twentieth Century highlights from the collection of Andrew McIntosh Patrick.
