Sir Alfred Gilbert & the new sculpture
The New Sculptors by and large chose to grapple with issues arising from the naturalistic representation of the body and the detailed rendering of its surface variations. The New Sculpture does not represent one singular style, but rather a range of options developed to make sculpture more vital and life-like.
Works in the show include Bust of Frederick, Lord Leighton by Thomas Brock (English 1847-1922); Orpheus and Eurydice by Charles de Sousy Ricketts RA (British 1866-1931); Girl with a Mirror, Sir William Hamo Thornycroft RA (British 1850-1925); and by Sir Alfred Gilbert (British 1854-1934) will be Perseus Arming, Comedy and Tragedy, Saint George and Icarus.
